Hello Devikings and Deviqueens! Liz here! Community Manager extraordinaire!
A short while ago I chatted with Elaine, our Art Director, and asked a few questions I’m sure you’re all interested in knowing the answers to. Moving forward, we will be posting production updates and discussions about design, art, lore, and all things Devikins here in an interview format for your reading pleasure.
So, to kick off, we have a short but sweet introduction to a future series of production updates that we at MoonLabs hope you enjoy.
A lot of people are curious about the art-style of Devikins, and in particular how the little monsters came to be. How did you want to approach character design, and what led to where you ended up?
I was given a brief and description from Sergio, and we realised we wanted something that would appeal to the general audience but also be unique in its own way. We chose the more cute option when it came to character features as it would be easier to work with the randomization, but also because it fulfilled the cute aspect we were going for. We wanted horror to still be present but not overwhelming, and while some of the characters’ features are closer to the horror aspect, we hope to be able to explore that part more through the environment and story.
What about outfits? Some funky designs have been shown so far. How did you come up with them?
Devikin may be from a different dimension but their fashion sense is similar to ours — and they love their gloves. We designed them with gloves on to accommodate different animations while not having to worry about making multiple versions for different ancestries (skin colour variations). We plan on having some really cool costumes and outfits to work on in the future, some that are tied to the face design as well.
